"Unknown" message from OWA when creating new email

I have been using OWA with Exchange Server 2003 successfully to reply to
emails for some time. However, every time I try to create a new email I get
an IE message box with just the word "Unknown" when I press the send button.
This also happens if I try to use the "Find Names" feature to put an address
    in the "to" line.

Obviously the error message could be a little more helpful (!!) but does
anyone recognize this problem? Search the MS knowledge base is hopeless
since the word "unknown" appears in hundreds of Outlook entries.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    William

Never heard of this one, but it sounds like it could be a JavaScript
problem. Check your IE status bar to see what zone it has put your OWA
server in, and either change the zone to something less restrictive
(like Local Intranet), or (if it's already in Local Intranet), ensure
that the zone's security settings allow Active Scripting.

    Lee -

Thanks for the suggestion. I added the address to my local intranet sites
and checked that Active Scripting was enabled. I then closed all IE browser
windows and tried it again, but got the same "unknown" message.

Interestingly, though - I tried it in the latest Opera browser and it was
fine. So you're probably on the right track that it was security-related.
I'll try relaxing my intranet security settings to see if I can get it to
    work.

    Regards,

    William

Nope, setting the intranet zone security level to "low" has no effect.

I have also noticed that if I try to close a message that I created from
scratch (rather than via reply) and tried to send I get a message "You do
not have permissions to delete this item".

Do you have a FE/BE setup? If so, is the FE at at least the same
Exchange patch level as the BE?

No, just the one Exchange 2003 server. It's behind an ISA 2004 firewall.

However, the problem doesn't occur with Opera, so I'm thinking it's browser
related (but that is the only clue I've got so far). It has been going on
for some time and from various machines so it's the same for IE 6 and 7.
(Most of my clients machines won't have Opera so an IE solution would be
    best.)

There are two OWA GUIs - the Basic, and the Premium. Exchange only
sends the Premium version when it detects IE at the user end. The
Premium version uses lots of JavaScript, and even some client-side
WebDAV requests. The Basic version (which you will see in Opera,
    etc.) has none of this.

Try enabling script debugging in your IE options, and see if anything
interesting is revealed (e.g. script execution is halted as the result
of an error condition) when you get the error message.
