How to stop NDR for spams to non existing users.

    Please Help.

We have Exchange 2000, service pack 3 running on a domain controller. We
have also installed GFI, a spam filtering software that is doing a pretty
good job of filtering SPAMs to the users. However yesterday I noticed that a
huge amount of outgoing mail (about 50000) was generated on our server.
Initially I was scared that the server was used for spam by relaying even
though we had taken all the precaution to make sure that is guarded against
open relaying. After inspecting the outgoing mail report generated from GFI
and also checking some of the mails in the badmail foder, I found that all
those mails were Non delivery reports to whatever 'From' addresses were used
by spammers. Also the original spam was addressed to some old employees that
had left long time ago. Is there a way in Exchange to delete the mails that
are coming to specific mail addresses without generating NDR? Mind you that
these are either fake or old addresses which do not have mail box on the
server nor any entry in Active Directory.

    Thanks

What's wrong with this group???????????? First of all, it's the "
microsoft.public.exchange.admin" newsgroup. Secondly, many of us still at
5.5 or 2000 are definitely interested in Exchange 2003 discussions....

    Mellow out...........

    Anant,
What would be ideal is that Exchange would automatically drop any message
sent to an address that is not defined in Active Directory. I've been told
that E2K does not have this type of feature.
    So two suggestions:
-create an account in Active Directory and when employees leave assign their
email address to that account. And add any fake addresses that spammers are
sending to. Of course that account will grow quickly and the mailbox will
    need to be emptied periodically.
-stick a qmail or Sendmail server in front of Exchange to handle inbound
email. Create aliases for former employees and fake addresses that will
send all of the email to the bit bucket before the mail reaches Exchange.

Or even better, create a distribution list with no members) and add the
e-mail addreses to the configuration. THis way the mail is accepted and
forwarded to all the members of the dist group. The server will say "OK,
I'll send this to all the members of that group"."Oh, there's no memebers?".
"Then my job is done.". and the message is gone. No NDA, either.

Thanks guys. Actually I thought about creating fake accounts for these non
existent employees but as Fred mentioned, will need to be emptied very very
frequently since the amount of SPAM is very high and was looking for a
solution. The distribution list solution sounds great and I think the list
can be made invisible too so its name will not appear in the list of
addresses. While searching on the net for the problem, I came across this
solution www.lunininfo.com/mailcatcher and was thinking about downloading
their trial version and try it. However that solution looks like, if I
accept and delete all the mails for non existing e-mail addresses in the
domain, NDR will almost never generated by the server. So if genuine mail
was sent to an address with some spelling error, will never receive such
report. I may be wrong and there may be a way to specify only the e-mail
addresses for which the incoming mail should be deleted without NDR. Anyway,
    distribution list solution sounds perfect.

I am a bit confused. Why this is Exchange 2003 question when I specifically
mentioned that we have Ex 2000 with service pack 3? Also is above thing
    possible in Ex 2003?

    Thanks to all

You could look at something like ORF from Vamsoft which will do ldap/ad
lookups and only accept mail for valid addresses?

I do that using postfix on a machine in our DMZ and on an average week we
refuse around 6000 emails to non-existant recipients.
