EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
"I have a friend" who happens to "wardrive" whenever he's on the road and
needs to check his e-mail. He finds it very easy to find open Wi-Fi
networks in the parking lots of upscale apartment complexes and townhome
communities in the Washington DC area.

Fleeing from the madness of the The Probert Encyclopaedia jungle
Matt Probert <www@probertencyclopaedia.com> stumbled into
news:alt.www.webmaster
and said:

heh - I have the opposite problem - I would like to provide this service
for my immediate neighbours - but am prohibited from doing so by at least
one of the agreements I have with my connectivity providers.

If you provide that sort of service, can you control the type of content
they view?.....And indeed, is that likely to be much of an issue?....

For example.....Say you allow other folks with a wifi connection to use your
conection.....Now say they decide to access some well dodgy kiddie
porn.....When they get caught, can you be held liable for allowing them to
access that stuff via your network?.....

I'd prefer it of Janet could use the laptop anywhere in the house, as some
day's her Lupus makes it impossible to get out of bed, so is it possible to
use a wireless router with a dialup connection?.....
Or is there any other kind of wireless setup that we could utilise in a
situation like this?.....

Should not be necessary as most motels have free wifi that covers the
parking lot. Likewise many chain restaurants, like Kryscal Hamburger
advertise free wifi.

do a search for HOTSPOT locator:

Likley get a better responce posting the question to
alt.internet.wireless

If your modem has a CAT5 the answer is definatley.

If it has a USB the answer is posably.

There are a number of ways to do the deed by other methods (a lot depends on
the physcal charteristics of you home) but those are best answered at

Karl,

Yep, they're all over the place here.

And it's not limited to apartment complexes and townhomes. I'm in a 60's era
residential area (single family homes). And I've seen at least three open
networks right here from home.

Hi, Swampy,

Yes, it's possible but not necessarily easy.

The system which accesses the dialup connection will need an ethernet port to
connect to the wireless access point. To actually make the connection you can
use a null modem cable or a hub but just a standard cable won't work.

Then you'll have to configure both computers. You'll need to assign IP
addresses to both (and possibly the router - most will have their own browser
for configuration). Set the computer connected to the dialup connection to
forward IP packets, and you're wifes computer to route everything through the
other computer.

Now, the only remaining problem is getting the computer to dial the connection
via remote command. But that will depend on your software, and I can't help you
there.

So yes, it's possible.

I was of the same mind until somebody pointed out that if strangers can use my
WAP, I'm exposed to somebody using it to upload spam - which would get my ISP
account cancelled by the provider.
