Why do my visitors leave?
Posted by Ignoramus4723 on March 24th, 2006

I noticedthat a large percentage of my visitors to my home page come
to it, and leave. I would like to know why. Are there any tools and
tricks to find that out? thanks

That's nothing unusual. Check in logs where do they come from mostly, that
may be a hint.

Most come from noplace, I have a domain name that is a single word
(algebra.com). They simply type it in their browser address window. So
I do not know what they have in mind.

Spice up your front page, visually. I strongly recommend you do so, but keep
graphics low in terms of size. Your front page has not evolved to take
account of all the available technologies, which are already supported by
Web browsers. Even if your front page is nurtured in isolation, that will
give a positive first impression and appeal to the visitor who will explore
further.

Best wishes,

Roy

Roy, I am quite open minded. I did reorganize my FP very recently
(yesterday), so that it offers more stuff.

So... What do you mean by spicing up a page? Choosing different fonts
and colors? Moving stuff around? Different organization? Adding
images? etc

How do you *know* they're actually people and not bots?

If they are actual people, how do you know they actually meant to go to
your site, anyway? You shouldn't worry about people who pogo-stick onto
your site and immediately bounce. For some people, your site just isn't
what they were looking for.

Good question!

I keep track of User-Agent data, and they have very unremarkable user
agents looking like various browsers.

Well, duh, but that's what I want to know, what is it that they are
looking for!

I am thinking to just place a little survey on my site and promise $1
via paypal for completing it. I would show it to randomly selected
visitors who come to my home page without a valid Referer. Let's say I
would get 100, that could get me somewhere at a relatively low cost.

Your web site seems to offer a worthy resource for mathematician hopefuls.
It would be nice if you could get more of them to dig deeper into the web
site. beneath the Entrance hide so many offerings of the highest content
quality.

As is in many aspects of life, first impressions are everything, even to the
most algebraically perplexed.

This is marketing, Iggy. You need a pop-under script that offers a
survey "Please, what was wrong with my site, what were you looking for
that you couldn't quickly see?" Also, you have to get this book called
Blink by the guy who wrote The Tipping Point, because it's about that
kind of thinking.

"Algebra Homework Help" - looks like a high-school kids website. At
least, that's the first impression I get, and first impressions count
for a lot. If I didn't know better from talking to you here, I don't
know that I would expect serious and in-depth math tutorials from this site.

I don't have any positive suggestions to offer, sorry. Still, I hope
that helps some..
