SVG graphics
Posted by Dylan Parry on March 21st, 2006

Hi folks,

I've been given a load of graphics files in SVG format, and while I can
open them in Adobe Illustrator, they don't look as pretty as they do in
Firefox et al. For obvious reasons I can't yet use the SVG files
directly, so I'd like to rasterize them first, but as I've said, the
only program I can open them in doesn't treat them the same as my
browser!

Does anyone know of a good program that can do this whilst preserving
the drop shadow effects etc that FF appears to support? Is it possible
to get Illustrator to render SVG as the author intended? Or is there a
way that I can import rasterized SVG into Photoshop?

Cheers,

The GIMP imports them pretty nicely. In general you'll get best results by
rasterizing them at a really high resolution, then scaling down as
required.

Alternatively, display them in your favourite browser and then take a
screen shot. Quality can be improved by zooming in before the screen shot.
(Opera has an SVG zoom feature -- not sure if Gecko has.) You will however
lose your alpha info this way.

Example file? I have no idea if Xara does SVG and how good, but I can give
it a try.

There is also someone working on "Uberconverter" (sp? and IIRC), which
should be able to import SVG, and spit out another format. No idea about
the status of the thing though.

That's perfect, Toby. I didn't think of using the Opera zoom feature,
but seeing as I'm not bothered about the alpha info (IE wouldn't have
played with it anyway!) I can simply insert the SVG into a page with the
required background colour and then take a screenshot.

Cheers,
