- portfolio - what to do
- Posted by Disco Octopus on March 27th, 2006
Hello.
Just to get some thoughts - mainly for my own interest - to see what your
thoughts are...
I have been building web sites for quite some time now, and have a
portfolio with a very broad range clientele.
*Some* of the web sites that I have built for some clientele could be seen
as morally offensive.
The question I would like to pose is... Would you put these possibly
offensive sites as part of your publicised portfolio?
Do you think that some potential customers would be turned off your
business because of these offensive web sites?

Basic Marketing 101 don't p*ss off your clients. If your portfolio contains
art photos of young women don't show a potential client photos of HIS
daughter as examples of your work.

I wouldn't do the sites in the first place. :-)
If I was a potential customer...maybe. I wouldn't want to see it in your
portfolio anyway.

Most people use a portfolio to show what they can do and the scope of their
abilities to sell their skills and get more work... not to just show off
what they have already done.
You say that "some" of the sites are potentially offensive... if you have
enough content to otherwise fill your portfolio and showcase your talents
and abilities then you shouldn't need those sites. If there are a
significant number of them or you really want to include them, you could
list them as an addendum as "We've also developed sites for..." and then if
somebody asks to see more examples of your work you can explain the work and
provide a disclaimer to it before they see it.

Ar, public house web sites, yes they are found highly offensive by the

Be selective of what you present to each potential customer. Because,
yes, potential clients are human beings with irrational prejudices,
fears and desires like anyone else.

I would maintain two separate portfolios. I would "hide" the potentially
offensive ones, but if I had a client who is interested in the "offensive"
style of work, I'd let them look at that past work.
Think of it like the "back room" at the video store, except the only people
who need to know it is there are the people likely to buy those videos.

You have to decide. I kept that site up and told them to go to hell. But
I probably wouldn't put adult websites in my portfolio, unless I was
marketing to other adult site owners.

I think that even if one is marketing his/her services to adult websites
that unless thats the only services you offer or thats your entire target
market for your services then I'd still probably leave the adult content off
the portfolio and then instead build a second portfolio site that showcases
the adult websites and services offered.
Its all going to be about income and if you can afford to risk losing any...
the problem is that everybody is different and you never know how somebody
would react to even just knowing that you've done work like that, let alone
if they saw it by clicking on a link and being taken to the page.
