Just a quick question to you. Is this person a professional who does this
type of work or a 'friend'? If this is a professional, I would assume that
you would sign some type of contract that would have clauses to cover you on
these points. If not, maybe you need to find a professional who does. If
it is a friend, doing it for free, then you need to consider how much of a
friend they are.

I had a site developed a while ago.
It is a database driven site ....PhP, MySql and Linux and maybe some
Dreamweaver etc.

The original developer is into other things now and now interested in
minor changes.

It needs some minor changes/programming.

I am planning on giving it to someone else. I do not know this
person.
For this I have to give him the username /password to the "whole"
site.

I am not technical so I do not know how to extract and give him just
the areas/pages I want to change.

Now, my question is :
how dangerous is it to give the username /password to the whole site ?

Can someone like him steal the code and resell it ? Is there a ready
market for such things ? (eBay?)

Are there any real serious negative things that could happen ?

On the other hand is this a fairly common practice ie to give the
username/password of the whole site to someone to do the changes? In
this case what precautions can I take ?

Could you please reply as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance
Sally

If you don't trust this person, or want to be absolutely
sure he can't harm you or the site in any way, you could
download the pages you want changed, have him change it
locally, and then upload the files yourself again.
If it is layout and html you want changed.

Don't know about MySQL stuff.

@yahoo.com says...
Giving out your username and password will allow a person to do anything
with your site, as well as change the password so you are unable to
access your files. It could be dangerous if you don't know this person.

That really depends on the content of the site.

Yes. Best not give out your password to anybody you don't know/trust.

The web developer normally requires access to the files on the server,
unless you intend to email them to him and upload the modified files
yourself.

Make a backup and hire a reputable web designer.

Carved in mystic runes upon the very living rock, the last words of of
alt.www.webmaster.ads make plain:

It depends on how trustworthy this developer is. Do you know anything
about him? Ask about his past work, and whether you can contact his past
clients.

Yes, if he's not honest.

I do it sometimes with clients. If you can't extract the files he'll need
to work on, it may be necessary. On the other hand you could just
download the entire site, send it to him, and let him find the files he
needs to work on and send them to you when he's done.
