Multiple domain hosting, ASP/PHP/Perl supp. wanted
Posted by newspost@hotmail.com on September 10th, 2005

Hello all there,

I have a very banal question.

I live in Uk and am looking for webhosting in Uk or USA or wherever.

I am very confused about the offers on the market.

Beside reliability, I would need:
* Windows Server (or a Linux where I can use ASP)
* multiple domain hosting (with DNS management)
* PHP/Perl support
* must not impede commerical use of webspace (resale)
* possible an ecommerce solution (also as optional package)

I have browsed several wenhosting. I have not found one with these four
feature together.

I could spend a few $ more if necessary if I can have them all.

Should any of you know a provider that offer these features, please do
not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks.

Regards,
Fab

Or about anyone of 10,000 hosts with a reseller program.

Thanks. It's a bit expensive but I can see if it is worth it.

The difficult thing to find is not the unlimited hosting but the
PHP/Perl under Windows platform.

I do not really need a reseller program, if the normal hosting gives me
the possibility of having unlimited domain names.

What does a reseller program gives you for a higher price? More
traffic/month, web space?

cheers,
Fab

Not really.

That's the kicker.
Many will offer Addon Domains, but unlimited?
No such animal.
There's unmetered, but you still have to stick to your resource allotments.

Yes.
And, usually, unmetered domains, more control features, more options and
more flexibility.
Under the most popular WinPlatforms some include Billing Features,
Integrated Support Functions and more.

Unless something has changed, "reseller" is a synonym for "multiple
domains". You don't actually resell the space if you are using it for
yourself.

Well, that's what confuses me. On the contrary, many providers (like
the suggested Vortech.com over here) offer the "unlimited domain"
feature also on the simple "shared hosting" package (see their home
page).
And if they do not specify any restriction in the agreement, you should
be free to resell part of the space and some domains to others.

Do you mean that all the domains will be associated to the same
homedirectory? In these cases, I heard calling it "domain parking".
Or do you mean that the allotments are limited and they do not tell
you?

They normally specify there is a "DNS management", if you have multiple
domains to manage.

About the word *unmetered*, I don't know, I'm a foreigner, but many
providers use the word "unlimited" (see the suggested Vortech.com, for
example).
And I have also seen some offering 20,30,50 domains.

And would you suggest it as a start for just about 4 domains/sites? Or
better to upgrade at a later stage? I was thinking it was better to
upgrade whenever It became unmanageable...

Many thanks.
Fab

I am not sure having understood your point.

If the agreement does not mention anything agaist it, what impedes you
to resell your space?

The ability to charge others, without the hosting firm being unhappy.

You may feel you can resell part of the space and allow others to use domains,
but it all comes apart when those to whom you have resold are (a) unable to
install scripts, or (b) unwable to get webstats, without knowing your user/
pass to login, and there's a good chance that (c) you cannot control how much
of your traffic or web space they take, or suspend their domains if they go
over some amount.

That's part of the management offered on most reseller accounts whereas a
"shared hosting" account may allow you to park hundreds of domains *so they
all see the same web pages*.

Yes, you might get around some of the restrictions by scripting, to redirect
from the main directory to sub-dirs, and might even be able to allow others to
add scripts or view weh stats, but you are clearly not entering into the
spirit of having a single a/c for one person/business, and as they offer
*reseller* accounts you could have all sites shut down/deleted in a flash,
if the hosting firm felt nasty. That would give you unhappy customers and
additional costs to get set up with another firm in the short term!

Even on the reseller plans, the "unlimited" domains is not at the headline
price... if you wanted to handle 50 users with small personal sites/minimal
needs, say 20 MB/500 MB, it would cost an additional ($3.50 x 40) or $140
for adding the user control panels, on the cheapest plan. Peter M.
