multipage HTML form with hidden fields
Posted by W E B G U R L on March 15th, 2006

I cannot get two parts to work.

Please look here: http://hostdnsau.com/search-test.htm

Click the broken image to go to the next page. It will take you seconds to look at it -
very simple form for testing. I am using a php script to process. No problems with that,
just two fields which I have marked in blue.

Any help appreciated.

Well, for one thing you have two fields each with the identity of "name"
and "email". One is hidden, one an input field.

Error Line 3 column 0: no document type declaration; implying "<!DOCTYPE
HTML SYSTEM>".
<html>
The checked page did not contain a document type ("DOCTYPE") declaration.
The Validator has tried to validate with a fallback DTD, but this is quite
likely to be incorrect and will generate a large number of incorrect error
messages. It is highly recommended that you insert the proper DOCTYPE
declaration in your document -- instructions for doing this are given above
-- and it is necessary to have this declaration before the page can be
declared to be valid.

Error Line 8 column 6: end tag for "HEAD" which is not finished.
</head>
Most likely, You nested tags and closed them in the wrong order. For
example <p><em>...</p> is not acceptable, as <em> must be closed before
<p>. Acceptable nesting is: <p><em>...</em></p>
Another possibility is that you used an element which requires a child
element that you did not include. Hence the parent element is "not
finished", not complete. For instance, <head> generally requires a <title>,
lists (ul, ol, dl) require list items (li, or dt, dd), and so on.

Error Line 9 column 35: there is no attribute "LEFTMARGIN".
<body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0"
marginheigh
You have used the attribute named above in your document, but the document
type you are using does not support that attribute for this element. This
error is often caused by incorrect use of the "Strict" document type with a
document that uses frames (e.g. you must use the "Transitional" document
type to get the "target" attribute), or by using vendor proprietary
extensions such as "marginheight" (this is usually fixed by using CSS to
achieve the desired effect instead).
This error may also result if the element itself is not supported in the
document type you are using, as an undefined element will have no supported
attributes; in this case, see the element-undefined error message for
further information.
How to fix: check the spelling and case of the element and attribute,
(Remember XHTML is all lower-case) and/or check that they are both allowed
in the chosen document type, and/or use CSS instead of this attribute.

Error Line 9 column 49: there is no attribute "TOPMARGIN".
<body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0"
marginheight="0">

Error Line 9 column 65: there is no attribute "MARGINWIDTH".
....="#FFFFFF" leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">

Error Line 9 column 82: there is no attribute "MARGINHEIGHT".
....gin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">

Error Line 39 column 41: there is no attribute "BORDER".
.... <input type="image" border="0" name="Submit"
src="../images/images2

Error Line 39 column 101: there is no attribute "WIDTH".
....../images/images2006/next.gif" width="97" height="20">

Error Line 39 column 113: there is no attribute "HEIGHT".
....ages2006/next.gif" width="97" height="20">

did you even post it? The problem he is having is passing information
from one form to another, not whether his code is valid HTML 4

If you can't post something that contributes to the question, how about
not posting at all.

So?

Ahh, I see.

This is usenet. Helpdesk is just down the corridor on the right - have
your credit card ready.

Seems to me you didn't offer a solution either. Can't speak for Baho (or
anyone else for that matter), personally I can't be bothered to wade
through reams of nonsense markup, trying to parse all the errors in my
head to see if they're relevant or not. If one is seeking help it behoves
one to listen carefully to what is being said. The O/P would do well to
clean up those pages - it is a useful process in any case and may indeed
make it much simpler to identify the problem.

How about you stop hiding behind a stupid made up name and tell us about
the sites you are building and the hurdles you overcome in the process.

Oh yes, on the subject of markup errors, when one is guru status or above
then one is in a position to decide when it is advisable to conform to the
published specifications and when it is ok to ignore them. Till then, it
is wise to remain silent on the subject.
