- MSIE dropped from Mac (& Win updates)
- Posted by Michael on June 24th, 2003
Hi there,
Ignore this if it's already been mentioned on alt.www.webmaster (I did a
quick search on Google's archive and couldn't find previous postings on this
subject), but the latest issue of IT Week reports Microsoft is dropping its
web browser for the Mac. It says Apple's Safari browser is the main reason
for the decision, so MSIE 5.2.3 for Mac OS X and 5.1.7 for OS 8/9 will be
the last versions on that platform (though Microsoft will continue security
updates for a little longer).
Something that I found more interesting is that MSIE will no longer be
available as a stand-alone product, but will only be updated with the
Windows operating system from now on. Does this mean the browser market has
matured so much that new features/technologies are not going to come as
often now, or a ploy to get us to update our operating systems?

[ IE development for Mac stopped (Safari) ]
The latter I am afraid...
But I expect security updates to come for a long time... And maybe when
not everybody jumps on the next Windows version maybe an update.
I recommend checking http://www.mozilla.org/ I am running Mozilla for a
few weeks now and like it although it feels a bit slugish compared to IE
(my opinion, feeling, can't explain). Also I am using Thunderbird (news
/ mail client) for two days now. I love it. Quite similar to OE but
without some of the quirks. However it crashed on me 3 times (no data
loss however). Both products are continuosly under development.

Hardly. Internet Explorer still doesn't implement useful sections of CSS1
and CSS2. And now since the next OS is Longhorn, scheduled for release in
2005, thats 2 more years where IE is a dead duck, while all other browsers
are constantly refined and updated.
Surely Microsoft are not thinking of abusing their monopoly? Surely they've
learnt the harsh lesson of being caught red-handed in previous efforts, and
suffered the humiliating embarrassment of getting off scott-free. Surely
they won't dare do it again? That's just mad talk.... ;-|
