- Moving hosting from the US to the UK
- Posted by marlyred on March 26th, 2006
Hi,
I have a website http://www.dmxdimension.com that is aimed primarily at
users in the UK. I have a 301 redirect on the the .co.uk domain name
pointing to the .com.
However I think I am losing out on potential traffic from the UK by
hosting my site on a US based server as my site does not show up on
searches in Google for pages that are in the UK.
My hosting company has now bought some servers in the UK and I
therefore have the opportunity to move my site over to the UK.
What I want to know is will I lose my existing serps by moving my site
to a different server? And is this the only option to get listed on
searches for pages that are in the UK?
Thanks for looking

I could be wrong here, but I think Google looks more at the domain than
the IP (if indeed it does look at the IP address).
I think if you keep your US host, but use the .co.uk domain name, then
this will bring you up in the UK searches.
Bear in mind that bandwidth is astronomically more expensive in the UK.

Furthermore, search engines are just a free bonus (and only that) I
presume you are considering other advertising/marketing methods?

It looks at the IP.
Its a significant factor alongside the domain extension.
If the domain ends in .uk it should be listed as UK even if its on a US IP.
If its a .com and its hosted in the US it will not be shown in UK search
results, not at the top anyway.
