Loss of color gradient
Posted by Yo on January 2nd, 2006

In copying a screen capture embedded in a Word document and pasting to
PSP 8.00, the title bar that is a color gradient in Word pastes to a
set of distinct color bars each presumably representing the average
color for that section of the full title bar. How can I maintain the
continuous color gradient in PSP?

Possibly a silly question (from someone who doesn't use PSP) but what
happens if you paste the same screen capture into MS Paint? That
*might* allow you to save the screenshot as a BMP file with 24-bit
colour and then import it into PSP with no loss of colour information.

To avoid colour changes, a lot of my screen captures end up passing
through three conversion stages to get them as GIF images without
drastic colour changes:

1. Screen-capture
--> MS Paint
--> 24-bit-colour BMP file

2. 24-bit-colour BMP file
--> another program for colour-reduction
(doesn't use a default palette and change pixels to
match the palette the way MS Paint does, often with
major colour-changes[1])
--> 256-colour BMP file

3. 256-colour BMP file
--> MS Paint
--> 256-colour GIF

I don't have PSP, but I'm guessing it happens because of the modus the
new file is in, before you past your screencap. Make sure the modus
has more than 256 colours.

Not sure. But my PhotoShop version has the following moduses for image
files (my own translation from Dutch, might be different in English):
bitmap
grey values
duo tone
indexed colour
RGB-colour
CMYK-colours
lab-colour
multi-channel
