- looking for (decent) free listserv
- Posted by garybeck@adelphia.net on March 16th, 2006
Can anyone hook me up with a decent listserv service? I'd prefer
something I can install and maintain on my own website, rather than
using a mass service like YahooGroups or Topica. I just don't want to
be dependent on someone else's system and I don't want my users to have
to put their info into someone else's database.
is there a script or something I can install on my web server, or
something like that? My webhost comes with an email list function, but
it's too basic and there are not settings or controls; I just put in a
list of email addresses and that's it, I have no other control.
I just want something basic. I don't need a web inteface for the
users, but I would like it to have a subscribe and un-subscribe address
and soforth, like most of the listservs I've seen.
any suggestions?
thanks

my hosting company (lowesthosting.com) offers a very basic email list
function. it is just a flat list of email addresses that get forwarded
to, if I send to a certain email address. there is no way for users to
sign up (other than sending me an email). there are no headers that go
in the subject line of the messages on the list, and the reply-to goes
to the originator, not the list. So it's a little TOO basic for what I
want.
the only one I've found so far that is free and seems to be in wide use
is Majordomo. I could install this on my website, but I want to see if
anyone has advice about better/other ones first.
thanks

majordomo. It's a pain to install and configure, and it's no fun to
manage the lists, but it does the job.

I'm going to have to second Karl's suggestion (wouldn't be the first time).
I've been using mailman for a number of years. It works very well.

I told my webhost that I wanted to put Mailman on my account. They said
they would put a different email list program called DADA on my account for
free. Anyone ever use that one?
