Linux Dedicated Hosting???
Posted by David Cary Hart on March 19th, 2006

Is anyone in this forum using dedicated hosting that they
are actually pleased with? So many of the web hosts have RBL
problems. Godaddy looked decent until I realized that they are using
Fedora 2 (in contrast to FC4 [FC5 as of tomorrow]). Then there are
huge price differences for essentially the same service with similar
bandwidth claims.

FC 2 is more stable than the latter. You should be p;eased that they did not
upgrade this. I discussed it in depth in the Linux newsgroups this
afternoon. The Computer Science department I am affiliated with still uses
FC2 and FC in general is more of a testing ground for RHEL.

I know that my hosts http://catalyst2.com are doing dedicated Linux (Red hat
as far I know). I can't comment on performance though. It's rather pricy and
I might be forced to move in that direction next month.

Best wishes,

Roy

Thats just par for the course these days due to customer's insecure scripts.
There is only so much you can do to stop this.
We fiddle around with mod_security to try and keep on top of injection hacks
but the only real way is to prevent any system commands specifically file
uploads via PHP.
The only answer is PHP in safe mode but until all hosts force this in their
TOS its not going to happen.
Any host who tries it will lose customers rapidly to hosts who don't.

I have been using http://zubrcom.net for over a year now and they have
really gone above and beyond on quite a few occasions.

Not sure of it is what your after as they do managed console-less boxes
which I imagine must be considered pretty "old school" these days. You can
get cheaper as well - they compete more on service than price.

Roy Schestowitz <newsgroups@schestowitz.com> opined:
FC4 is infinitely more stable and faster than FC2. Going back to PHP
4.3 would break several applications including all of the graphs.
Ultimately too many LAMP compatibility issues.

Because of some base differences, trying to upgrade individual
packages like HTTPD and PHP creates dependency hell. Then there are
GCC issues. Since I compile many RPMS myself. I would have to retreat
my workstation to FC2 which is a major fiasco.

<Deming2U@TQMcube.com> posted something that included:

Do you have some suggestions about how they solve those problems?
There is a limited supply of IP numbers, and they are in short supply.
If you have a website that's on a Fedora 2 server and your hosting
company moves to FC5, your site may well stop working. There's a GCC
upgrade involved, and new libraries. You can't assume that your
existing cost will compile and link without changes.

That's a pretty drastic step to take. Most hosting companies are quick
to apply security patches, but are reluctant to make such drastic
changes as this.

Two restaurants. One offers all you can eat, chicken, with 2 sides,
for $15. The other one offers all you can eat, chicken, plus all the
sides you can eat, for $20. The $20 restaurant actually has lower
costs, because green beans and mashed potatoes and applesauce will
fill you up cheaper than chicken will.

The hosting business works pretty much the same way. It's
all-you-can-eat, and for someone whose site needs 20MB of space and
200MB of monthly transfer, paying an extra buck to upgrade to a 20GB
site with 200GB of monthly transfer doesn't make sense.

The big differences are things you cannot see. Do you compare latency?
Do you compare server load? What's the support like?

To answer you initial question, Sturgeon's Law applies to webhosting
as much as to anything else. About 95% of all hosting is crap. A lot
of the remaining 5% are not offering a bundle of services that makes
sense for you. If you speak to someone who is happy with their
hosting, either they have one of the 5% hosts or they don't realize
the difference, but that doesn't mean YOU would be happy there.

Say what?
Just how would upgrading GCC and glibc have any thing to do with html?
I don't even think it would have an impact upon CGI either unless you're
writing your CGI in C or C++.

I have upgraded both since `95 and it hasn't impacted my web servers one
bit.
