Is joomla (a CMS that forked off from mambo) not the doggone, son-a-bitch,
24/7, 711, to-go, no tips please I'm British, best friggin CMS system in
the business.

She sure is puur-tttt-eeee. Whatever! Speak to the hand!

Sorry, I had to let off some positive steam after updating from the old
mambo to the shiny new joomla today.

I've not used it, but it looks like a rehash of Mambo to me.
What's different?

in doing this major move over to joomla, I had to progress initially to
version 1.0 of joomla.

Once i am satisfied that everything is working fine on my site, i will
update to the latest 1.05 version. So I am still seeing what changes
there are.

in answering your question, the upcoming release of joomla - version 1.1,
will have:

UTF-8 built in, Internationalisation (translation of the core system)
allowing multi-lingual support

Core Restructuring, modernisation of core, providing a more powerful,
flexible framework

FTP uploading of extensions (components, modules, plugins, templates),
resolving file ownership and Safe Mode issues

Database drivers, a project providing the ability for Joomla! to work
with databases other than mySQL

Hooks for officially supported components already in the core
Plugin framework - a system to allow easy integration of external web
applications

It's a fork. A major disagreement over licensing between the company that
did the initial development and a number of significant contributers IIRC.
Joomla is the version by the latter.

Yep, i used to use mambo and i decided on balance to steer off with the
Joomla crowd, what with (i think) almost all of the core development
team being involved i just thought it was going to be more reliable and
less of a *bump* in the course of development. Joomla 1.1x will also
see some improvement in the Access Control i think, too, which will be
nice.

You're right, by the way, Joomla is fantastic, and incredibly well
supported, i've only just (after a year and a half of using mambo and
now joomla) hit a situation where i want to do something and someone
hasn't already written something that does it for you... it's sooooo
nice!

Umm. OK. Distinct lack of quoting, but according to your references header
you're responding to my only previous post in this thread.

Google doesn't goes out of their way to help their users follow Usenet

I said no such thing. To judge from the demo, the default templates are
horrible, the choice of markup language is poor, the URL convention is
nasty, the dependency on JavaScript is insane, the use of popups is awful,
the admin interface is unintuitive (OK, so I can reorder items on the front
page, and I can check a little box next to each item, but what is the check
box for? And how can I add / delete / edit sections? Oooh, I've figured out
how to change the state[2]! How do I add/delete/edit sections, still can't
find anything for that? Hmm, the menu system seems to be immune to keyboard
control too...). I also have a strong dislike for the programming language
used.

[1] And when joining a community, following their conventions is just basic
good manners.

same here, Trevor.

I started using mambo about 17 months ago, and after joomla broke away I
took stock and waited to see how things would pan out. But it was obvious
pretty quickly that joomla was the way to go. And thus a few days ago I
made the transfer over.

yes, the modules/components and mambots made by third parties are
wonderful. In fact that is something I will have to look and sort out.
Over the last 17 months I have tried out so many modules and ocmponents,
that I must uninstall those that I don't use.

And the best thing is, well apart from being a superb system supported by
great people who continually crave to make it even better, is that it is
FREE!

David, get yourself a free newsreader eg XNews.

And use your ISP's usenet groups.or failing that, google for those out
there who offer free access to newsgroups.

Trevor was replying to an earlier post of mine.

I detect that you're not a fan of joomla.

all down to taste and needs I guess.

Personally, having tried loads of CMS's over the years, joomla is the
best that I have ever used (and the only one that I would heartily
recommend to others)

In a message in reply to David. Trevor might reply to the right posts
when he gets to see threads in a real newsreader though ;-)
