It doesn't even seam as though he / she even had a back-up plan in case
something went wrong.
I most certenly would not have had the server in the bacement.

Why not? I run a few servers from the garage. One of them is even online
to the net if you know where to look.
I believe others here also run connected servers from their
basement/loft/garage/bothy/shed/cavern/tower/living-space.
It really is no big deal for a dev suite or sacrificial test server.
