- Posted by trevor on January 17th, 2006
our favorite gal the Blind Webmistress says her friends can't see images on
her site in IE and lo and behold, neither can i. everything looks fine, you
can pull the images directly with their URLs.
www.cc-inclusion.org
anyone help her out?

<img src="/images/ccilogo1.gif" alt="CCI Logo" width="" height=""
^^ ^^
Also, don't use XHTML, unless you really know what you're doing (most
don't, and HTML 4.01 strict is better in that case)
Better alt text would be "Creating Community Inclusion logo"
<h1><img src="/images/door.gif" alt="animation of a swinging door"
width="" height="" /></h1>
Which is not that good as a heading text... (not limited to SEO)
I mean, reading a book and:
Chapter 1: Animation of a swinging door
Which is ok if the book is on making animations...

oh jeez, she didn't declare her dimensions. thanks again John.
not a chance. we set her up with this template because it's easier for her
to navigate.
agree, i'll pass that on.
yeah, she has no idea how it looks, only how it sounds when described to
her and she likes the way it sounds.
i am so not telling her you said that. try reading the book and producing
the animation with your eyes closed.

But going to HTML 4.01 strict means only changing the first line(s), and
removing some odd closing stuff from img and friends.
If I had to imagine a sound with it, it sounds like *bang*, *bang*, *bang*
(the door moves very fast in Firefox).
Well, h1 is a section header, it's an odd start of a section. Also, a h1,
directly followed by a h2, directly followed by a h3 is probably a bit too
much.
The logo looks very bad BTW. If you know which font was used, and I have
it on my system, I can probably make a better one. Making it twice as big,
blurring, and scaling it back to original size might improve it a bit.

Better still would be to not mention it is a logo at all. The fact it is a
logo isn't relevant, the meaning of the image is.

I've always thought so, yes. But what if a blind person is looking for

LOL. i really have to get her to post here herself.
yeah but look how gracefully it fails over when she forgets an image
dimension
i'm totally sure you can. i'll pass on your offer, that's very kind of you
and i know she'll appreciate it.

hey Els. i'd agree. we're growing towards alt texts that try to indicate
the meaning of an image as well as it's function. blind users seem to
appreciate this, although most would criticize it as being wordy. for a
while we were using this for our logo
'the dataSpheric logo features a central spherical s shape and is colored
like sunshine and citrus fruit'.
the image is identified as a logo for our shop and offers certain 'sensory
equivalents'

That works if you only need one logo. What if your assignment in
school is to collect logos from websites? Yes I know, this may sound
far fetched, but people can have more than one reason to collect
logos. I still feel that just the word logo (I'd put it in brackets:
"Creating Community Inclusion (logo)" ) doesn't occupy much space on a
web page, nor does it deter a reader much from the content of a page.
