How to analyze access log?
Posted by None on January 9th, 2006

I can download my http access log from my host's server but it is just
a massive txt file. Is there something I load it into to get easy to
read data from it?

Should play nicely in your spreadsheet or db app of choice.

Try dragging and dropping the text file onto the Web Icon in our program
TopDrop

http://www.wieser-software.com/topdr...s.shtml?060109

There's a free trial available there.

The program can also grab logs directly from your ftp site.

I get these processed by Webaliser, Analog, AWStats and Visitors. All are
free tools. I tend to just view the product of AWStats on occasions.

Keep the raw product, however, which is the full logs, preferably compressed
(compressions ratio is excellent). Better analysis tools will come in the
future, so you can always go back and (twisting amaroK's slogan)
"Re-discover your Web site".

I use a standalone program called Weblog Expert Lite.

http://www.weblogexpert.com/lite.htm

I just use the free version as the extra features in the full version can be
more hassle than help.

ie - multithreaded DNS lookup on a 4 million line web log will most likely
earn you a phone call from your ISP's security team as to why you are DOSing
their SNS server.

That would be DNS server...

You have to turn DNS lookup on of course and set how many threads, but most
people will still be able to cause issues.

10 Threads and 15 minutes was enough to cause my own adsl providers DNS
server to become unresponsive...

*cough*
