Help on my web site layout
Posted by Dave Dale on January 19th, 2006

I have a problem with the layout at www.clubwager.net

It looks okay under normal size font, but when I change the text size
to smallest in internet explorer the right box is messed up and the
center area ovelaps the side boxes.

Any fix or ideas would be appreciated.

Dave Dale

Heck what a mess!

In desparation I ran it through the W3C validator, I guessed there
were nesting errors with the tables, and yes there are!

"Error Line 306 column 8: end tag for "TR" which is not finished.
</tr>
Most likely, You nested tags and closed them in the wrong order. For
example <p><em>...</p> is not acceptable, as <em> must be closed
before <p>. Acceptable nesting is: <p><em>...</em></p>

Another possibility is that you used an element which requires a child
element that you did not include. Hence the parent element is "not
finished", not complete. For instance, <head> generally requires a
<title>, lists (ul, ol, dl) require list items (li, or dt, dd), and so
on. "

Not to mention:

"The MIME Media Type (text/html) for this document is used to serve
both SGML and XML based documents, and it is not possible to
disambiguate it based on the DOCTYPE Declaration in your document."

which is bound to confuse web browsers!

How much did you pay for the template?

Fleeing from the madness of the ClubWager.net jungle
Dave Dale <please@use-the-form-at-clubwager.net> stumbled into
news:alt.www.webmaster
and said:

Ugh - way too complex.

Where to start? perhaps look at the position:fixed items and associated
widths. btw: you have referenced your CSS more than once. Also the
central <div> appears to have a width of 100% - if you used floats for
left and right bars (instead of position:fixed) then the central <div>
would simply take up the remaining space.

FireFox has issues at large font sizes.

Good luck.

That sounds like a little bit of a problem!

Completely OT, Sam, did you see the contestants on bargain hunt today?
Talk about hopeless cases, poor Philip Serrel was shaking his head in
disbelief.

You should have no expectation that the layout will be anything other
than a problem.
