Graphic background
Posted by Fred Atkinson on February 24th, 2004

I see all of those cool graphic backgrounds that people put
up. They have letters that appear to be engraved on the image. But,
for the life of men, I can't find something to make those with.

Can someone tell me what graphic packages could do this. It
doesn't have to be really fancy, just a basic way to create it. I
have doubts that there is anything in the way of freeware around for
this, but if there is, I'd like to hear about it.

The gimp (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) has many plugins to handle fonts.
Many of them are for banners and buttons but can easily be used for
backgrounds.

It has a few plugins for carving too.

It is free and better than many expensive drawing and photo retouching
software software.

There is a newsgroup dedicated to it:

comp.graphics.apps.gimp

Bonne chance!

Yes,

But I'm on a Windows machine at home where I do my Web design.
All of my sites are on Linux servers, however.

Any suggestions for Windows?

Cool. I downloaded it and installed it. Now, I just need to
learn how to use it.

Thanks, everyone.

Not sure quite what you mean without a picture but sounds like
what Paint Shop Pro can do. 30 day free fully functional trial
at http://www.jasc.com/

I have done that 'engraving' a time or two myself. :-)

Fred - By using graphics like this on your website at
http://www.mishmash.com/ you a reducing your chances of being picked up by
search engines.

It's better to use text for links like that rather than text-images.

You must be in a different business to me. I have never had a visitor ask
me to put such a thing on my site.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does it do for your visitor?
