That is reasonable, but Google should start by removing their own usenet
"rip-off" from the web search.
Funilly enough the count on the google search link I gave went down from 31
million to 5 million overnight. In case google are still listening they need
to add /group to the robots.txt as well as /groups :-)

I'd say it's a free search engine -- just not a free customer delivering

alleged rate of customer delivery, isn't it.)

I search. For free. Free searching.

Some people pay to advertise.

But how do you tell them apart? I look after the "official" website of
a moderated newsgroup (inasmuch as a newsgroup can have an official
website), and part of the site is a web gateway to the group. This is
partly so that we have a web-based archive, but also to allow people
without direct Usenet access to participate in the group without using
Google. I don't think it would be reasonable for the whole site to
lose out because of that.

I dunno. I do ideas. Someone else does code.

I don't dig web gateways to Usenet, myself.

i have been a massive fan of google for years - but in the past 6 months or
so, they have been making one bad decision after another. imho

to not list forum pages is merely their latest poor decision.

Someone started this thread which has been extremely active. I have
yet to see anything supporting the notion that Google is deindexing
forums, let alone any specificity.

Anyone?

Fair enough!

Nor do I, as a general rule. But we have a specific problem in that
the group in question is moderated, but several large ISPs seem to
manage to keep losing the moderation flag on their active file,
meaning that their customers can't post to the group. A web interface
is one way round this.
