Is DMOZ Still Relevant?
Posted by David Cary Hart on January 25th, 2006

Just curious. Are people still jumping through hoops to get listed by DMOZ?

No, they're not relevant. And this coming from an ex-editor. The
problem is that they keep locking editors out of thier accounts if they
don't log in often enough ... hell, sometimes things just don't need
fixed ... and there are too many resulting dead links and stale
directories. ODP still grabs my personal bookmarks and it's kinda
embarrassing.

I don't even search there, anymore.

And lo, David Cary Hart didst speak in alt.www.webmaster:

Sheesh! DMOZ is so "Web 1.0" :P

Look now to del.icio.us and kin, my young padawan.

Regarding relevancy: since the directory gets copied a lot, a listed link
gets copied a lot. Because of that 1 link from DMOZ results in countless
back links (from pages with low PR and all, but still) which is good for
the PR of your page and good for your position in the SERPs with some
major SE's.

I don't really use the directory myself (that much), but am happy to have
some of my pages listed.

forum. It took too long, in my opinion, so I publicly rescinded my application.
Sophomoric but it pleased me to tell those self-important putzes that they are
irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. BTW, that cat is still without an
editor.

Well, that's the point. The organization became too territorial, too
regimental for my tastes. I'm an inclusive sorta gal and I hated having
my entries deleted, moved or re-edited because someone didn't like the
content of the site I entered.

AFAICT, dmoz consists of a core group of dictators with a minion of
slaves to do their work ... their way.

What does "Open Directory" even stand for? Open to who? Open to what?
Results? A very incomplete, censored directory

When I applied to be an editor for a small category I got a pretty quick
reply: No, I didn't meet the criteria.

In the end its probably a good thing for me and saved me lots of time... I'm
one of those types who, after expanding my categories covered, would have
probably been in there for an hour or two every day keeping things going.

I think it's only really relevant in as much as it gives you one more return

I agree with Grey: DMOZ is web 1.0. The way to go now is del.icio.us, blog
pinging, and probably a lot of people are not aware of it yet: digg.com

You get more links in shorter time by ending up a blog compared to waiting
for 6-8 months for someone to decide if you are worthy or not. Let the
people decide, not some editor with a mind of his/her own.
