DMOZ Redux
Posted by David Cary Hart on March 8th, 2006

I know that it's probably irrelevant but it is, nonetheless,
annoying if not frustrating.

This site http://sspbl.tripod.com/ is, essentially, a one
page site without original content - just links to whois data for the
15 or so ISPs that they consider spam friendly. There is really no
information that is useful to anyone. Yet, it is listed in:
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/A...am/Blacklists/ For that
matter, so are several dead links.

I have been trying, for almost two years to get our site listed. In
addition to the real time blacklists, it includes considerable dynamic
content, real time data, graphs, charts, tutorials, several methods of
searching our database (geographically, by IP or IP range), a
multi-rbl check, etc. We provide an rsync server to keep the
blacklists current as well as a daily tarball. Yet, the site remains
unlisted.

The category has no editor so there is nobody to complain to. Should
I just get over it or is there someone reasonably normal to
correspond with?

Without an editor your three choices are:

- volunteer to edit the category.
- wait for someone else to volunteer (unlikely).
- forget about it.

I consider DMOZ a waste of time. If you are in Google, Yahoo!, and
MSN you're in pretty good shape. In fact, in my robots.txt I disallow
all robots except those three, Ask Jeeves/Teoma, and Gigablast (and
the engine that handles my site search).

How many people go to DMOZ? Not many. How many people go to all the
different directories who use their data? It adds up.

ie: http://www.google.com/dirhp

Rastus ci ha detto :
I think the point is that DMOZ has a page rank of 9!

Thats true but DMOZ used t get a lot of searches when they appeared on the
Google results pages as "google directory".
We used to do very well out of that.
Those were the days...

It is not only about users that use DMOZ to find a site. Being listed
gives the advantage of having *many* backlinks, not only from DMOZ. There
are many directories that use DMOZ data, and once listed with DMOZ you'll
find those other directories linking to you too. That is a good thing. So
I don't consider DMOZ a waste of time at all.

going to sound silly but that's what makes it all the more
