- Current Nightmare with Verisign/Network Solutions
- Posted by frequent_flyer on February 21st, 2004
First off let me say that I know Verisign/Network Solutions sucks. I am
just posting my current predicament with them in hopes that it stops someone
else from using Network Solutions.
I have a client who has been using NetSol for their webhosting (getting
charged outrageous rates) and have been having a great deal of trouble with
their pop mail. After countless calls to NetSol, they received the response
that they will have a technical person look into it and get back to it
within 3 - 5 days.
They hired me to create a new website and deal with transferring the name
server to the new web host, etc.
I contacted Netsol three times earlier this week to confirm the process with
them.
They said it goes like this:
1) I cancel the account through the control panel of the verisign account
2) A retail account is then automatically setup IMMEDIATELY which will allow
me to login and change the name servers to the new host
I asked three people how long the process takes and they ALL SAID INSTANTLY.
Today at 3:00pm local time, I initiate the cancellation and do get the email
about the retail account and login. There is no domain listed in the
control panel.
I call NetSol back and get the well it is a automated process and it should
be instant but it could take up to 24 hours.
I finally get the call escalated to the supervisor. He informs me that it
is indeed a automated process and that it can take 48-72 hours. I explain
to him that my client will lose money from not having email starting Monday
morning as will I since this project is not going accorinding to the planned
timeline. He finally says "There is not a thing I can do. I have
researched it and I don't know who is in charge of the technical part of
transferring the account information. You will just have to wait." I
expressed my disastisfaction and gave my client his phone number and
continue to call him once an hour. However, it could take weeks knowing
NetSol.
This company has setup it's support as a smoke and mirror for the fact that
they don't do anything within any reasonable time period.
NetSol costs smallers companies and unknown amount of money each year and
they simply don't give a shit.
I cannot encourage anyone strongly enough to stay away from this monopoly.

I totally agree with this post. In addition let me say that you should
also consider avoiding CIHost for your hosting as well as
NetworkSolutions. Both are an absolute nightmare to deal with or get
anything done if a problem arises not to mention their charges are
traditionally much more then you can get elsewhere. For way to long a
select few had a lock on the hosting as well as the registering of
domain names and pretty much charged whatever they wanted with minimal
to no support. Thankfully that has and is changing. Now there are
hosting companies and domain registers who are competitive and know
that customer service plays a significant part of their successful
existence. Thanks for doing your part to spread the word. Let's vote
with our pocketbook for providers who give good quality products as
well as follow up support and service.

Goodness knows what you are doing wrong.
I have some names with them. To change nameservers I simply log-in and
change them.
What happens when you do this?

Lets see. The domain name doesn't show up under the clients account.
Network Solutions says it should but it will show up any minute. Funny that
it still hasnt.

ok. I still don't understand why he had to cancel the account and make a
new one, simply to change nameservers.
Almost invariably, if you fanny about with an account, you will get
problems.

Hi...
These types of stories are so common with Network Solutions and
Verisign. Anytime I work with a client who uses them, I do whatever I
can to switch their domain to Dotster, which IMO is by far the best.
I have 20+ domains registered with them, and I've yet to have any
problems.
As for hosting, I stay away from the national hosts. I use either
CFDynamics, 2uNet, Page-Zone, or a few other lesser-known folks.
These are companies I've heard about via word of mouth or praise via
Newsgroups, and I've yet to be bit by any of them.
So my word of warning to anyway -- if they're a larger company, stay
away at all costs! For web hosting, mom and pop businesses are still
the way to go IMO.
Take care,
Alex.
