Three beers for the young man - and good luck with the next project.

This guy on css-discuss was enquiring (or rather bragging) about his clone of
the idea, which he had already begun and wants to do using rich CSS. I guess
it's genuineness that counts.

It's too bad there aren't more original ideas in the world than copycats.
The reason the social bookmarking sites can replicate and not go too
stale is because of the social network on the internet ... not driven by
moola.
Which defines why cloned pixel-advertising sites will fail and fade away.
They are designed and intended to drive up revenue for their advertisers.
When they don't make money, the get-rich-quickers will find a new fad to
clone.
The reason the original milliondollarpage worked is because of the
creator's motive and determination. It was truely a unique fund-raising
scheme.

I'll add examples that I know of rather well:
*supercilious - at least not commercialised like delicious (Yahoo!)
*Ping-o-matic clones
*Blogging software/CMS - which was the first one? This must have evolved, but
features are endlessly copied or provide 'inspiration'
They all try to jump on that same wagon. Some of them manage to snatch it
from the innovator, eventually. Some will just fade into darkness, never to
be heard from again.

True. As with most "I could have thought it up ideas/I had that idea for
years " it comes down to not only think about it but also: doing it,
timing, and commitment.
I have seen quite some projects fail because of:
- they thought they could make money with nothing
- they thought that just copying an idea works
In short, if it's easy to copy, everybody can do it.

I don't see any problem with that. The innovator might have started it,
but how unique was the idea? Ideas come rarely from one person, look in
history, when communication was less fast, often similar or even the same
idea popped up in several places.
Also, the blogging software of today has grown. I never understand that
people like Tim Berners-Lee, who just came up with HTML + browser are
suddenly considered the person who invented what we now call the Internet.
To me it's like saying that the guy and girl who invented sex is
responsible for the current world population and all its problems :-D
