- College courses

Just got a leaflet for a well-established college in Glasgow, offering
the following:
<quote>
Internet & Web Design Dreamweaver MX
Work with advanced layout features - Frames and Cascading Style Sheets.
Understand forms, objects and plug-ins.
Use Flash and Shockwave content.
Insert Quicktime movies and Java applets.
Gain a nationally recognised qualification.
</quote>
Then this one:
<quote>
Internet & Web Design Microsoft Frontpage
Understand HTML and DHTML.
Create hyperlinks and sound effects.
Work with themes, tables and frames.
Gain a nationally recognised qualification.
</quote>
Sad isn't it. This is the very latest in college training. These dudes
will be coming out armed with these skills, presenting themselves as
state-of-the-art web designers.
Anyone fancy becoming a lecturer?

Sadder is that they might actually get the jobs because of it,
cause it sounds and looks fancier than properly coded HTML and
CSS without the flashlights and animated hyperlinks..
At least that way you could have your say to the next
generation of webdesigners <g>

Funny you should mention this. I had a module last year about
webdesign[1], and the lecturer said to me "I bet this is really boring
you, isn't it?" and I replied "Well a little, but I could have taught this
module myself in my sleep."
_____
[1] Strange module really, we talked about validating code, CSS for
presentation and loads of other standards stuff. Then we went on to talk
about how Notepad could be used and why WYSIWYG editors are crap!

When I did Autocad at college, half the lecturers were students the
previous year.
It was suggested to myself and some others that we may consider doing the
same thing, which I declined to pursue.
Now that sounds like a very useful Web design module you had!

Well it was, I suppose, but not for me. The lecturer didn't really know
what she was talking about as it was a new module and she was using
lecture material given to her by a colleague from another institution.
I found it annoying when certain tiny details were wrong in the slides and
felt the need to correct them and stick my oar in! As I don't like
speaking in front of the class, and nobody likes a smart-arse, I kept
quiet and brought up my concerns with the lecturer later; she was (is)
also my supervisor, so that made it easier to tell her where things were
not quite right
