- Bandwidth Thief Alert

And this one is really bad. The jerk was leeching a 226kb
flash file from my server!!
I enabled the hotlink protection because that file has been called
300+ times to his website just this month alone.
Going back through my logs this must be the first month he has
leeched the file because I didn't see it show up in any of my other
months logs.

Well I enabled the hotlink protection and fixed his wagon.
I also fixed a couple others that were leeching some of my small
images.
not that I mind those anywhere near as much as I do the one leeching
the flash file.

that people who do visit that site can see it and know he is scum.

Really? It displays on my browser.
I would have used a jpeg but for one small problem...
that jpeg also falls under the hotlink protection and so it won't show
on the hotlinking sites. only way I could get it to show was to make it a
file
that was not protected like .wmf.
If you know any way around this I would be happy to hear it. I used the
Cpanel
hotlink protection because I wanted something faster than what I could throw
together myself.

While sitting in a puddle Heidi scribbled in the mud:
open Notepad than save as xxx.wmf and let them take that.

I see in IE: Stop Bandwidth Theft!!! gigglepages.com
In NS7.1 I get only characters which don't make sense.
As it is a dutch site, you might wanna give them something
like: Wat hier stond, was gejat!!!
(what was here, was nicked!)
and provide a link to where it belongs, and who knows, gain
extra visitors :-)

Yes then you are seeing the image.
Good idea putting it in dutch but then the problem becomes
there are sites hotlinking from my site which are in japanese,
chinese, english etc.
I really can't be arsed to make an image that covers all the possible
languages LOL.

Well it isn't just that flash. It was other images too. I did a
thorough check on my referrer logs and found quite a few
websites linking to various images/flash etc.
Heck I have even found whole pages lifted before from
GigglePages and they linked to the images on my server.
Damn People. :-(
But that flash movie... if they were not so lazy they could have
gotten it for themselves. It is a free content type deal...
Anyone can use it and the links to the site to get it at
are right there in the flash file...

It might be due to the "w" part of the WMF file? (Hint: WMF stands for
Windows Metafile Format) I use Linux, and as such my browser (Opera 7.5)
won't display this type of image.
As to an alternative format, I cannot suggest one, but if brucie were here
I am sure he would be able to suggest a .htaccess method of sending a JPEG
without itself being subject to hotlink protection :\
