phpMyAdmin as standard and I "can install it myself". Well, I
appreciate their confidence in me - heartwarming, that is - but I
haven't the foggiest idea how to do that ("Wossa computer, then?")
and they now consistently do not answer posts direct to them or
left in their forms.

Not unusual. A lot of places don't install phpMyAdmin.
But the fact you have no idea how to install it yourself bothers me
greatly. A webmaster needs to have a certain amount of technical
expertise; he doesn't need to be an expert at everything but should at
least be able to upload files and change parameters.
And phpMyAdmin is one of the easiest packages to install I've ever seen.

Bare Minimum: Read and Follow Instructions aka RTFM
I'm getting a little embarrassed by some of the folks who label themselves
webmasters or even designers.
A skunk sprayed my front porch last evening ... this stinks just as bad.

yes - a webmaster for sure
but warrabout dezinerz? anyone who has ever run a support desk for web
site designers (sic) will not be astonished by the need to provide basic
FTP usage instructions in teddy bear language.

Looks like their "customer service" is as crap as it was six years ago when
I suffered it.
If you want to host multiple domains with phpmyadmin etc, check out

httpme.com ,a name I recall with fondness. Set up by Robert Walker, a one
time regular here, and a man I would call a mate.
I know he sold it. Were you with them under his stewardship?
