Probably no help, but I had a problem years ago with a strange extension and
it was where a Mac file had been converted into a DOS 8.3 type filename. So,
for example a Mac file called 'Seven Slav nudes' would become 'sevensla.vnu'
(couldn't think of anything more imaginative though it makes a pretty
picture!).
