Out of memory, but I've got loads
Posted by Alan Terry on November 10th, 2004

Sorry if this is OT, but I could really do with some advice:

For a few weeks now I've been having PC problems and they're getting
worse.

3 or 4 times a day I get the message "There is not enough memory to run
this programme". Most of the time when returning to the Desktop I then
have to 'recover' it.

Info:
- IBM Aptiva
- 40GB HD (25GB free)
- 256MB RAM
- Win 98SE
- Broadband from Demon
- Norton AV and Firewall
- Turnpike e-mail software

Thanks in advance,

If you don't use Spybot then it might be a good idea to do so, there might
be a tracking program(s) etc. running in the background. Just a thought...

Sweep for crapware.

If you run the Task Manager, can you see anything obvious that's
eating a lot of memory ? If you watch the graph, does the consumption
go up when you start something, and not go down again when you close
it ?

Are you running Firefox ? (Which is a greedy little so-and-so)

How often do you reboot ?

That's not much. If you can (any desktop, a laptop less than two years
old) you should be able to squeeze 512MB in there.

Have run Spybot now which ID'd and zapped about 50 items from about 7
sources / trackers (or at least they sounded like trackers if I
understand it).

Still had problems with an hour.

Ran it again and it found/zapped one more.

Q1: Do I need to be concerned about other items it finds - there were
several other items, including relating to Explorer, Media Player and
WordPad?

Q2: There are file in Temp Internet files that I can't delete - is this
a problem?

Q3: I can't find Task Manager - where would it be?

No.

Used to be once a day, but lately 4-5 times because of the problem.

OK, but I haven't had any problems before and a mate of my son who Knows
Stuff was very complementary about the speed of the machine about a year
ago.

All help really appreciated.

Thanks,

No such thing in W98, but you can download Process Explorer free from
www.sysinternals.com.

Have a look to see what programs you've got starting at bootup -
program I'd recommend is by Codestuff, called Starter. They don't have
a website as such, just a load of mirrors, but Google will help you
there. It has two main screen, one shows all the programs that startup
as Windows starts, and the other shows all the currently running
processes. You can cross-reference items on both screens to:
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Taskl...s/tasklist.htm
for programs/processes that don't give away what they are related to by
their name.
Disable all the ones you don't need or want. As an example, if you have
installed a Java plug-in for a browser, you'll likely find a
"jusched.exe" (or something similar). Now unless you want a Java Update
Scheduler running, you can disable this from starting, and save a
little bit of memory and startup time as well.
