- New (and improved!) DVD Price comparison site
- Posted by brett.hambridge@gmail.com on February 1st, 2006
Hi,
Following quite comprehensive feeback from this group and others I have
modified the interface for my new region 2 DVD price comparison site.
http://www.billybargain.co.uk
I would really appreciate any feedback that you might have.
The feedback received previously included: Poor design (sometimes very
poor design!), good searches but sometimes "indifferent results", Fast
Searches, comprehensive range of retailers.
I have mainly been working on site design at this stage and am
currently working on improving search methods.
Many thanks in advance.
Brett

Do you ever comment when other users ask for feedback on their website .
A user asked for feedback yesterday (www.blacktieskis.com) and from what
I can see you totally ignored the request and you havent said a word
about it one way or the other .

Hi Krustov,
I've only recently found google groups and posted only twice. I
apologise if I've offended anyone but I do activly participate in other
groups that I subscribe to (and will here).
Also I like to know a bit about what I'm talking about before posting
and therefore "lurk" for a while.
Like I said before - I hope I haven't offended any one but I will post
when I can.

Krustov is a troll and i'm just trolling .
Lots of people eventually put me into a kill filter and if you do it now
rather than later you will save yourself some time .

May I suggest you ignore "Krustov", he is the groups pet troll.
The one thing that people wanting site feedback should do though is
to make the subject line look less like Spam - if you are asking for
feedback then say so in the subject line!

Many thanks Jerry,
Is there any way of modifying a title or should I leave it for now?

I would leave it for now, wait a week or two, make some more changes
and then ask again - this time making it clear that you are wanting
feedback / site critique.
BTW, I had a quick look, it looks good but seemed to take an awfully
long time to load the DVD details, also just serving an server error
when no review exists yet is not good, why not craft a 404 page
explaining and perhaps asking for a review?

Hi Brett. I just checked out the site. Don't listen to that Krustov
tool, I just had it out with him after he posted the same comment on my
evaluation posting about my site (www.blacktieskis.com). The site looks
pretty clean and straight forward which is nice, although asethically
speaking I think it could be jazzed up just a bit. My suggestion to
this would be by creating a 'drop shaddow' affect on the white contents
section (on top of the gray background). I also think you should keep
searching for a better way to make your rounded corners at the top as
the right one doesn't match smoothly. I would also look at styling the
links so that they aren't your standard blue with underlines. I highly
suggest looking into putting the time and effort into learning CSS. I
see this as taking over from table designs in the not too distant
future and really extends html in every way.
Hope this is of some help.

I had a very quick look in Firefox on a Mac, and I quite liked it from the
point of view of a potential customer (we buy a lot of DVDs). I think the
simple design works well ("normal" blue underscored links etc), since
visitors to your site want to find DVDs quickly and probably aren't too
interested in anything too fancy which slows the page loading. I like your
logo which looks very professional. I had a *very* quick look at your code.
You are missing a Doctype and need to run it through the validator to pick up
silly errors (there were 36 altogether).
I too got a 404 when I tried to check out a couple of reviews. I think if
you don't have reviews, at least a synopsis would be helpful or, as someone
else suggested, a custom 404 page, or just a standard page saying there is no
review available.
One thing I did find unhelpful was that the alphabetical list was sorted to
include the words "A" and "The", so there are an awful lot of films under
"A". For example, I would tend to look for "A Tale of Two Cities" under T
and not under A, and I know that Amazon lists their titles that way.
On the page that displays when you select a DVD, you need to add in a bit of
padding because your text is too close to the image (slap bang right up
against it in my browser). Also the link to "next page of results" would
look better visually (IMO) if it didn't sit tight on its line.
Hope this is helpful - I have bookmarked your site<g>.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am currently working on the
validation errors mentioned but thought I'd let you know what else I'd
done following your feedback:
1. Provided a list of retailers where prices are compared from
(http://www.billybargain.co.uk/retailers.php) - this is listed at the
bottom of each of the price comparison pages.
2. Added some padding for images on the price comparsion page.
3. Provided a message when there is no review available rather than
the default 404 error message.
Thanks again for your help and support.
Brett
