"longdesc" musings

I have just added a "longdesc" attribute to the logo (top left) image
on:

http://www.westmidlandbirdclub.com/

Before I roll that out to every other page on the site, I wonder what
people think about...

* Is it legitimate, to have a longdesc on a "decorative" image
with null alt text?

* Is it legitimate for the longdesc to point to a regular webpage,
elsewhere on the site, with the usual navigation, etc?

* Is it better for the attribute to be

longdesc="club/logo.htm"

or should it be

longdesc="http://www.westmidlandbirdclub.com/club/logo.htm" ?

With regard to my last question; the former works when testing locally,
the latter allows for a convenient "find and replace" on all our static
pages, at whatever directory level. I do wish there was a way of saying
something like:

longdesc="[root]/club/logo.htm"

Or is there, and I've missed it?

It would be unusual - what is the purpose of the longdesc?

Again, what is the purpose of the longdesc?

I think that putting a link to "/club/logo.htm" will do the trick.

As you can see from visiting the target of the longdesc attribute:

http://www.westmidlandbirdclub.com//club/logo.htm

it's an explanation of the contents and history of the logo.

It hasn't changed since I last answered that question!

"at whatever directory level" ?

In which case, it's possibly more than a longdesc. That feature is
intended for people who are unable to see the image - such as a
description of a chart or diagram - but where the image conveys the
full information.

In this case, the additional information could be of interest to
people who can see the logo, because it goes much further than simply
describing the image. Linking it via longdesc is misleading, because
it implies the converse.

Sorry, I didn't explain that! The initial / denotes 'root'. So at
whatever directory level you put the link to "/club/logo.htm", it will
always point to a folder called 'club' in the root directory.
