- Liability insurance for web designers?
- Posted by Mark on February 19th, 2006
Hi,
Can someone recommend a company that provides good public liability
insurance policies for web designers / IT consultants? The policies I
have looked at seem to have strange exclusions such as "loss of data
held on a computer system" which is the sort of thing I would have
thought should be specifically included!

A back up system would be the most effective 'insurance'. In the US we have
'business interruption insurance' which may apply but that would be a
stretch as most insurance companies expect the client to use due diligence
in protecting the asset.

Public liability insurance is very different to business interruption
insurance and different again to Professional Liability Insurance.
You should find that most office policies (£250 per year+) will include
public and employers liability with office contents cover. Most will have
bolt on extras for things like business interruption and legal fees cover.
Just taken out a policy with http://www.insurance2day.co.uk/pi.htm who also
have a professional indemnity policy geared to web developers.

Mark:
We asked the same question you posed about 7 years ago when we started.
We ended up with Alstate which was at the time the lessor of all evils.
Insuring non-tangebales is a difficult business. We manage about 30 big
sites and have integrated a policy which mitigates the potential for
client liabilty such as (Hurricane Proof) facilities and B/U procedures
even for our junior developers. We have never had a loss of data
casuality that was not handled properly either in-house or at the
datacenter. Good "House" procedures will help you on this topic. Hope
this was helpful.
