- Google maps or alternative
- Posted by David Cleland on February 4th, 2006
hi,
anyone know if it possible to allow users to add their location to a
google map ? I run our school alumni forum and I would like users to be
able to add their location so we can create a map of where everyone is now ?

What software are you using for your forum? If it's SMF, there's a free
modification available to enable a pretty good GoogleMaps interface.

http://www.simplemachines.org. I transferred my allegiance to SMF from
PHPBB some time ago.
Take a look at their own support forums and see if anyone there has
implemented GoogleMaps. Don't forget you will need to set the forum
permissions, as to who can (a) place a pin and (b) see the map at all.
You probably won't want unregistered guests seeing exactly where all
your members live!

Thanks for that Molly, in your opinion what are the benefits of using
SMF over PHPBB, baring in mind that both would be new (from a
implementation POV) ?

Having used both, I found that SMF is easier to customise if you're
the sort of person who is happy poking around in the templates and
code yourself. But PHPBB has a bigger user community, and if you want
a custom look and feel but don't want to do the work yourself then it
has a big collection of user-contributed skins. I suspect that it
would be easier to integrate Google Maps into SMF, due to the fact
that it's easier to customise overall, but I haven't tried yet so I
may be wrong!

I found SMF more powerful, and very easy to set up and configure. The
PHP templates are well-commented, making it easy to tweak the PHP if
you're into that; their support forum is very busy and informative (one
rarely has to ask a question, as searching the forum almost always
returns the answer); and there are masses of modifications and skins
available free from the forum. And nobody's written any exploits for
SMF yet! :-)
The trickiest bit about it is getting your head round setting the
permissions (at membergroup level and at board level), but once you've
got the hang of that, the rest is pretty plain sailing.

First thing to note is that it doesnt have a header.php and it leads you
a merry dance if you want to change the stuff at the top .
Second thing to note is even though you are logged in if often asks for
your password again as a security measure and is quite annoying .
Permissions can problematic on some unix installs .
Horrible middle of the screen grey colour when you first install it .
www.whatforum.co.uk is a krusty website and there are several other
alternative forums that are just as good .

I certainly would like to be able to add pre-selected locations so at
the click of a button the map would refresh to those coordinants.

hi all, I got the api working but I can not get the map to go to Lisburn
Northern Ireland - apparently 54.52, -6.03 when I add this I end up in
the indian ocean.
