- Google Code: Web Authoring Statistics

There's some very interesting stuff here:
http://code.google.com/webstats/index.html
about how people are [ and are not :-( ] complying with HTML standards.
Oddly, they've chosen to use SVG images, which I.E. can't see; you'll
need FireFox, Opera or similar.

Opera 8.5 is just showing me black boxes - no indication that it
_might_ be able to do anything with them, either.
Firefox has just toddled off to look for a plugin.

Right-clicking on the black box in Opera pops up what looks like a Flash
menu - High Quality / Original Size / etc. However inspecting the .svg file
reveals it's actually an xml file. But when I tried renaming it to .xml,
Opera still simply displayed it as a black box.

For the same reason that inspecting a .xhtml file reveals it's actually an
xml file. SVG is an image format expressed in XML.
How does Opera deal with XHTML marked as being generic XML?

Stevie D mumbled the following on 07/02/2006 19:38:
Got the latest version? FF 1.5 (latest version is actually 1.5.0.1 me
thinks) has SVG support built-in, so no plug-in required.
Worked fine here - FF 1.5.0.1, WinXPHSP2.

Which Firefox are you using? My 1.5.0.1 (on Win XP Home) just displays
the SVG. Native SVG support was added at v1.5.

SVG files are one of the many kinds of XML file. According to my
browser, the SVG is being delivered as "image/svg+xml" which is the
correct MIME content-type as far as I can tell.
Does Opera have native SVG support? If not, there may be a plugin.
Last time I looked IE needed a plugin to handle SVG (the one from Adobe
seems to be as good as any) but I have not bothered with it since
upgrading my Firefox to 1.5, mainly for the native SVG support.
