Wake up and smell the coffee, Andy. That's education through and

then you learn to drive.

Nobody's saying it's right, just that it's something we have to live
with.

I've taught in schools and I now teach in a college. There is no course
that I know of that stipulates the use of any type of software, let
alone Front Page <spit>.

However, plenty of courses state that they expect students to use
'software tools' (exam board buzz words - dontcha love 'em?). Add to
that the fact that many ICT teachers are simply not capable of teaching
HTML, much less HTML/CSS. And of those that do, many will teach
deprecated mark up.

So they have to use an authoring package and since Front Page is on the
system and is no extra cost, that's what they use.

At our college we have access to any Microsoft product. The blanket
site licence is ridiculously cheap.

For the record, my foundation students who are creating a web based
resource are hand coding using Notepad2. But they won't get any
recognition or extra marks for that.

better, allowing any tools and teaching XHTML. They didn't teach it

I think that's the root of the problem. One of the few lessons M$
appear to have learned from Unix is that if you give the products away
to education you can achieve market dominance a few years later.

People who use Google groups to post through are to stupid for their
opinions to be worth anything because they haven't got the brains to
find a proper nntp host....

You really sound like a, "One size fits all", pillock sometimes! :~(

Andy Dingley mumbled the following on 08/03/2006 23:44:

"OCR does not recommend particular types of software for any unit."

However, it also mentions several times that: "Candidates will require
software that enables them to complete all of the assessment objectives
in accordance with the unit specification and assessment guidance." and
that "OCR will not make allowances for software that does not permit
candidates to complete the objectives as specified."

In short, as the tests are written (in terms of wording) for the most
common software base, like it or not, Office, then it seems silly to
only try and teach in a way that doesn't go with the "teach to the exam"
concept.

I'm assuming you don't work in education/teaching Andy, as "teaching to
the exam" is exactly what happens, at least until the exams are passed.
It's all about reaching Government figures, either the number of A*-C at
GCSE or reaching Key Performance Target's/KPTs for the Learning & Skills
Council as it applies in prisons and FE. That's the nature of the beast.

Sorry, I was attempting to be sarcastic, seems like I failed. :~(

The point I was attempting to make was, just as there are people who
need to use Google groups to access and post to Usenet there are
people who are required to (try and) work with Front Page. Just as FP
is not really a web authoring (more like a DTP) tool neither is
Google groups a NNTP server. IYSWIM?
