FFx plugin for audio
Posted by Del on November 9th, 2005

Me again.
Any idea why Firefox gibbers "No suitable plugins were found" or even needs
to download a bl00dy plugin to play an mp3?
It's standard & universal www audio format that should be part and parcel
all the way from version 1.

<embed src="xxx.mp3" type="audio/mp3" autostart="false"
height="50" width="380" controls="console">

Am I making an daft error or is FireFox being awkward? I know I can download
RealPlayer although I refuse to (long story) but listening to audio is a big
part of a site of mine and mustn't require the visitor to manually search
for a plugin.

There's several hundred standard and universal formats. I have
applications for them. I don't expect my browser to open word
documents, pdfs, mp3s, etc. since it will do a far worse job of it
than a separate application [1].

Try using <object> instead, since it's the one recommended by the
standards and so probably the one with better Firefox support. Or
better still, don't embed it.

<a href="xxx.mp3">The XXX song</a>

As you say, MP3 is a standard format, and most people (with a
soundcard) will probably have something capable of playing it, which
won't necessarily be their web browser.

[1] I realise several browsers do, and it's a bad idea for the reasons
set out in http://useit.com/alertbox/open_new_windows.html - though I
don't agree with his suggested solution since that causes equally
large problems when opening the document *is* passed off to a separate
application.

The reason I want to embed is to get the little play/stop console on the
page to carry on viewing while it plays, rather than blasting open
MediaPlayer like <a href="xxx.mp3">The XXX song</a> does.
Tried it as object: IE showed the console but play button was not active,
Firefox showed nothing, not even the text telling you click to download the
plugin. (when you do click it, it can't find it)

If firefox can't find it's own mp3 player when the piece of junk does it's
auto search I think I'll just laugh and leave it there...
Unless anyone knows another way to produce a small start/pause/stop bar on
the page itself?

Don't go out of your way for me, just if you know one already.

--snip--
I get what you mean, I have got Sony Soundforge and Cubase SX audio
software... infact you could even have top of the market ProTools or Logic
Pro on your mac and it won't play an mp3 or wav any better than IE.
(trust me)

Conversely if you open a separate app, you can view *other* pages
while it plays, without needing to open a new browser window/tab.

It's probably worth providing the link as well, even if you get the
<embed>/<object> solution working, just because plugin support is so
variable.

The article is 3 years old (today, curiously enough), but might help you
solve your problem and stick to standards.

Okay, here's a thought. Like I said above, the reason I don't want to anchor
to the mp3 is because mediaplyer annoyingly fills the entire screen. I am
trying to use JS to fiddle the link so it brings up mediaplayer in a set
100x100 size like a mini jukebox in the top left.

I tried the JS method used for sizing new windows but it's not working when
the link opens mediaplayer.

And I should hope not, too.

It's bad enough javascript resizing browser windows let alone other
applications too.

How about just providing the embedded version and a link to listen in
standalone player, rather like the bbc do?

Yes that's suitable for the songs, but on the page explaining all the
strange named chords there will be an mp3 of the chord to go with it...
1) the viewer needs to be able to read the theory and hear the sound without
a standalone player cluttering the window,
2) embedding is almost instant play without starting up the standalone to
hear a short audio,
3) I'd like to be able to use the loop=true function so they can hear the 1
chord over and over without hitting play every 5 seconds.

Bugger ain't it.
