- Dezyner of the day nomination: City of Edinburgh Council
- Posted by David Marsh on September 9th, 2003
I've just found out that the City of Edinburgh Council now makes its
planning applications accessible for perusal online. This means that you
can 'easily' find out the basic details of what applications have been
submitted. A neat idea, and one potentially worthy of a pat on the back..
The site is at: http://citydev-portal.edinburgh.gov.uk/
...However, unfortunately the site dezynerz have not bothered to
develop the site in accordance with web standards (and therefore are
breaching various laws (DDA) and are acting against the spirit of open
access to information) and some parts of the site appear to be broken in
browsers other than Internet Explorer (although the basics appear to
work).
Furthermore, if using other browsers, you must configure your
browser to spoof IE or you will be kicked off rather rudely.
Complaints regarding this can be sent to: helpdesk.planning
@edinburgh. gov.uk, but -- get this -- all this gets you at present is
an autoresponder telling you that they're not geared up for email yet..
Nice to see my 'tax dollars' at work effectively...
<sigh>

Who what it said that ISO9001 might mean producing crap, but at least
it's well-documented crap?
Oh, now I see what you mean:
Warning: A system error has occured.
Error Number: 666
Error Description: Public Access has a minimum requirement of Internet
Explorer 4 in order to be viewed correctly. Please confirm that you

Error Source: ufweb_commandutils.asp, GetGuiType()
"Error 666"? This has *got* to be a sick joke, surely?
