best IE to preview with ?
Posted by Piliger on July 29th, 2003

I have been using IE5.5 do do previewing along with Mozilla and
sometimes NN4.73.

Is IE5.5 the best IE version to use ? I am loathe to install 6 as
there are still 30% of users using IE5, but is there a better v5 to
use ?

There's nothing after 5.5 in the 5.x series, although you'll probably want
to run Windows Update to make sure you have all security patches etc
installed.

If I were stuck with a single version of Internet Explorer to use, I'd
probably go with version 6. Its "Quirks mode" is similar to 5.5's
rendering, but you can also test in its "Standards mode".

Obviously the best approach is to test in all versions, however the bar's a
little high for most people, requiring virtual machines, multiple machines,
or a dual-boot system.

because of Microsoft's fascist OS.(Win2kPro up to date).

I may do what you say as I believe about 60% are now using it.

If you can afford something like VirtualPC or VMware, then it is
worth it to enable you to test in IE 5.0x, 5.5 and 6 - all of which
have different but "problematic" bugs when you to try and ask them to
render valid HTML + CSS.

You could also consider getting Opera (free from www.opera.com)
which shows up other problems and allows quick validation through
CTRL-ALT-V (aside from character set issues!). This _will_ show up
errors that IE does not, e.g. specifying :hover attributes on
paragraphs, etc.
