1&1 Complete newby questions.
Posted by frank on February 4th, 2006

Hi, first time here! Can I ask some embarassingly simple
questions(well to me they aren't!) here abut using the 1&1 web set up?
First time I have ever tried this, setting up my own webpage, up until
now I have just used pbase to upload my photos. I tried their "help "
line, and after selecting an option, the line just goes dead. Attempts
to e-mail questions have gone unanswered. If this is not the place,
could some kind soul redirect me to a place where numptys are
tolerated! ;-)
Thanks

Don't know what 'pbase' is (I assume it's some sort of photo uploader) but
I don't think One&One support it.

You will need to get hold of an FTP client (WiseFTP is what I use, but any
client will do the job including the command line FTP command), configure
this to connect to your domain name (frank.co.uk or whatever), specifying
your account name (starts with 'u' - if you don't know what this is, sign
into the control centre
http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/H...usControlpanel, sign in using
your domain name and it will show you your account name somewhere on the
initial page after a successful sign on) and the password you use to
connect to the One&One control centre (where you configure your domain).
Once you've done that it should connect to your One&One domain and you can
upload whatever you want, create new directories and upload into those as
well.

You will need to make your default web page (the one that loads when
someone types in www.frank.co.uk) called index.htm and for it to be in the
root directory of your domain. If you don't have an index.htm in the root
then when someone accesses your site, using a web browser, they will get
either an error message or a list of all of the files on your site, which
may or may not be what you want.

All of this stuff is an FAQ available from the control centre, so it may be
worth logging back on using your web browser and looking in the on-line
support FAQs.

Thanks Richard. I have just been on the phone to them again, and given
up after quite a while just listening to their music. Also 5 e-mails
to date, have gone unanswered! Their so called support is abysmal. I
would advise anyone that is likely to need support to steer well clear
of them!
I have read the faq's, help pages etc, and have not found any answers
to problems. As I said, I am a complete novice so might be making hard
work of this! ;-( I have done a fair bit on my page, but for a start
it seems to be left justified, I can't seem to center it.
When I open package overview, I get two domains, one which will be my
webpage, and another which I gather is free. On the first one, I do not
get the web builder etc shown, I have to go into the second one before
I can get that up, plus forms etc. Is that correct? Could you explain
that?
In the photo gallery, I can't see any details of permitted sizes of
photos allowed, ie. what is the max sixe it will go to? There are only
2 albums allowed, how many photos are permitted in each album? When I
change the transition it makes no difference at all.
Also in creating ftp account, it asks which directory, and offers a big
list of choices, I'm not sure what I should be putting there!
If you answer any of these problems. I'd be very grateful, as it looks
like I'm going to be very much on my own. If all else fails, I'll use
their 60 day money back offer.
PS. pbase is an online photo gallery, mine is
