What prevents a surface search engine from having an extensive deep
search feature ( Ex : A health tab in Google , Ask.com's zoom feature)?
The vertical web search idea is great but is there anything that
prevents surface search engine companies from replicating these results
(effectively)?

Speed; Clutter, among other factors.

Not sure what the advantages would be?
A disadvantage is that any imperfection in the setup may exclude some sites
that the searcher would otherwise have found.
There plenty of 'specific' SEs about, but the reason that they've never
'taken over' is that they generally just don't do any better than G, Y!,
M$ - so people choose to use one rather than hold a range.
For specialist stuff, no-one beats a quality directory!
