- Isn't the Google algorithm the most important thing
- Posted by Dan V. on March 24th, 2006
I have it on good authority that the page rank algorithm explained here is
still very accurate except that some outbound links are OK if they are
trusted ones.
http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank.html
I am trying to simplify the SEO concepts that I have heard.
From what I gather the most important SEO concepts are these:
1. Good keywords
2. Increase Page Rank - there is only 2 basic ways.
a) Getting good incoming links (trusted links from trusted pages - non
spammy)
b) Writing new quality pages (not too- competitive) because each new page
has a PR of 1.
3. Basic optimization (incoming links have anchor text, page title, links
in natural text, headings)
4. Using the Google Algorithm above to channel and focus page rank to your
most important pages so you don't waste PR.
All the other stuff really pales in comparison.
I have been going after testimionials 'do this' 'do that' and not really
understanding why, but the algorithm explained - I think I finally get it.
And won't waste so much time.
Please confirm or enlighten me
Am I missing other major concepts?
Because I am thinking that if I was on a budget of 10 or 20 hours, I might
only do these things...
I would use " Example 3 " in the web site as much as possible for my home
page, if appropriate, to gain PR and popularity.
thanks,

That bit's kind of right in that getting the links is usually
essential. I wouldn't worry too much about the PR of the pages though,
rather worry about whether a link from that site or page will bring
you interested traffic. The point of getting higher in the engines is
that the presumed viability will being you more traffic, so if you're
getting the traffic anyway...
or less than one, but that's just irrelevant maths.
etc.
Play with it if you want to.

I just stumbled across a very comprehensive compilation of PageRank
concepts.
Have a look at http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank.html for any
clarification regarding PageRank concepts that you may be missing.

Thanks BB.
I think my home page (and all pages) are leaking too much PR.
I have lots of Navigation buttons (css) and redundant buttons on the top and
bottom of the home page and others.
Plus another css left menu and contextual anchor links per page. I must
have about 25 links on the home page, and thus on most others.
Do you agree with this? If you want to see it please check out triple w

I am thinking of removing the bottum hyperlink nav text in the footer, and
the left css nav buttons on the home page.
Is that wise do you suppose?
thanks again.

Do they go to inside the site or outside, and are they to terms that
are related to the main business in hand or theme, shall we say? I
don't worry too much about the home page being like a brochure and
being so diffuse and diverse in its coverage of subject that from
necessity it covers so much it won't rank for any of them on its
content alone.
Off we dutifully clump...
This is a template page, no? And, um, you offer SEO I see? Making you
one of my competitors. Byeee!

Thanks Bill.
re: Template page? Yes I use Macromedia Dreamweaver for web design if that
is what you mean. If you mean, did I buy this template from someone, no I
did not.
Competitor? to you the guru? Well I wouldn't say that. I am just starting
out. I have a full time job in database programming and a young family.
re: "I
I have never heard of this one before. I have always heard to have only a
few, say 3 main keywords per page so as to not dilute it.
Also the home page has the most PR usually from external incoming links that
it would seem a shame to have (like me- 25 outgoing internal links- to
'waste it'.
I still can't get over or quite understand the PR leaking thing. It seems
to me that I want a limit on it., and that I have too much.

You won't have time to learn SEO then.
It's pure me.
Absolutely true, but I gave up with that for the home page as people
expect the page they see when they type in your domain name to be like
a brochure, detailing briefly most aspects of what you do (it's a
hangover from three-dimensional physical thinking as opposed to
cyber-space thinking). This isn't a bad thing if you're a small
company as no doubt all you do may be described in semantically
related terms, but if you're a whacking great company with interests
in diverse areas then that won't be the case. So I don't worry about
optimising the home page so much anymore. Just give the people what
they want. But there's only me says this.
I don't worry about PR, I worry about traffic. Anyway, those incoming
links shouldn't all be going to your home page. This is a web site,
every page is potentially the front page for some aspect of your
business.
Well you carry right on worrying about PR and I'll carry right on
about traffic.
