- Gateways! SE Friendly ????
- Posted by Mick on June 28th, 2003
Hi
I have been approached by a search engine submission company who are saying
that they can
meet my search engine needs by creating gateways to my website.
How is this looked on by search engines?
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Did they say why your site has needs anyway? Can we have a peek at
your url? I myself was approached by a company today offering to put
my site at the top of the engines "all the year round". So much crap
talked by so many peoiple. Does your site have mucho Flash? Very
little textual content? Their offer might make a distorted kind of
sense. they presumably meant doorway pages. Let's have a look at the
site and see, eh?

have to turn into a writer any minute).

I don't quite know what you or the search engine submission company mean by
"gateways".
If they mean that your site will be mentioned or recommended on other sites
then this is good. The more links you have pointed at your site the better.
The best links pointed at your site are those in the DMOZ directory and
those on proper high quality sites of friendly companies like your suppliers
and customers, trade association or whatever. Such links are best set up by
you politely and perhaps persuasively contacting the relevent sites. If
you use the Google toolbar then you can first evaluate your friends sites to
see if a back link to your site is worth having. You need links from pages
with Page Rank (PR) =4 or more.
Some "link farm" sites seem to be set up just as masses of links with no
content of any value whatsoever. These sites are a waste of time and there
is no point paying money to be listed, even if there are hundreds of these
"link farms".
If they mean some peculiar front end for your site I would be very
sceptical. Search engines work best with simple clean sites, no frames and
with plenty of good text and picture content on all pages. A proper title
and description meta tag is vital for every page. Right from at the outset,
you need to make up your mind which page you want people to come to first
and then stick to this decision for many years.
If you say what is your site URL, I can comment on what you have already and
help you.

Run, far, far away. Gateway page is their cuteway of way of renaming a doorway page.
Always be skeptical of any SEO firm that "approaches" you. Especially via email.

Hi Eric
Thanks.
The company seem to build doorways to your site and submit, probably via
some software.
The site I am trying to improve on the rankings is a travel portal
www.internetholidays.co.uk
Any advice/feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time
