- Complete revamp or new domain?
- Posted by Mr. Polzek on March 27th, 2006
Hi,
I am facing a dilemma here.
I have an idea which I can implement either by revamp of an existing website
or creating a new website with a new domain.
Here is the data which illustrates the problem.
1. The topic of the exisiting website remains unchanged, the same keywords
are targeted.
2. What is to be changed is complete design and copy.
3. I am considering deleting pages and creating new ones, but this I suppose
would affect present ranking (bad, still better than nothing).
Now, the website is 9 months old now, which is a great advantage over a new
one.
What should I go for then?
What happens if I delete all pages except home page, and create new pages?
Should I leave all the pages as they are, only change their content and add
new ones?
I need to add, that the new one will be aiming to be 10 times bigger or more
than existing one.
Please advise
Cheers,
Paul

You have reached the fork in the SEO road, remember the cat's advice.
Cat : "That depends a good deal on where you want to go."
Alice : "It doesn't much matter where."
Cat : "Then it doesn't matter which way you go!"
Indeed.
Advantage from an SEO perspective.
Depends on who you want to please, the spider or the visitor.
Say goodbye to most of your rankings.
Say hello to a happy visitor.
Build and remove as needed in stages.

How about changing their names, say www.example.co.uk/key to
www.example.co.uk/facts ?
I must add that only the home page is ranked in google at the moment,
although I submitted the sitemap to google few weeks ago.
Like age of the page, sandbox effect.. Anything else?
Well, I am not afraid of spiders, so both, I suppose
I think I can achieve the same effect design-wise and content-wise.
So it's ok to erase all the content and replace it with new contect on the
same subject with the same keywords and similar keyword density?
Forgot to add... I will need to switch hosts as well. How does it affect
rankings???

I have forgotten to mention that before possible revamp, I WILL NEED to
switch hosts as well. What's its effect?

Hey Paul,
I'm not able to answer all of your questions. I see how my previous response
was quite vague though so I will elaborate somewhat.
All considered ( these pages have little SERP representation to date ) you
should be OK. Of course update the Google SiteMap promptly after uploaded
the revised web site.
.... any links that your web pages may have already attracted
.... some SEs will return results for quite some time for pages that no
longer exists and this could be distacting to a potential visitor, in time
this effect will go away
I think you can please both too.
At the stage that the web site is in, it is best to do this sooner than
later. After you are sure that the basic skeleton of the web site is
sustainable then stick with it. To change the framework every year or so can
be hazardous. Think about developing an architecture that can evolve with
future additions, implement the design and structural changes, then go with
it and have confidence with it.
I'm uncertain as to how to answer this at this time.

That's ok, just keep the file names the same and the subject of the
pages the same.
Yes, it would.
It is indeed. The site could be on the point of bursting out of the
Sandbox, why not wait a while?
Bad things happen.
Yup.
Good! Not a bad thing at all.
I did already.

Why are you switching hosts? Will you be transferring your domain or

My website is now maintained by somebody else and I do not know the host.
But it's not 1and1, and I want to switch to 1and1 as I am using it now for
another website.
What's the difference beetween transferring and forwarding?
I'm planning to transfer all the files and the domain to 1and1.
How about that?
