Is it possible to have the mail button not consider spam as new unread
mail? I go from excited about new mail to pissed about looking at spam.

If you can figure that out, patent it. You'd be a miracle worker. If
the spam filter doesn't catch it, it's up to you to. And when you
report it as spam, you're helping others avoid it.
