- Invisible links
- Posted by paula.unger@gmail.com on March 6th, 2006
Hi,
Is it true that a site could get blacklisted by Google if it has hidden
or invisible links on it? I thought it was, but I can't find anything
to comfirm this.
Thanks,
Paula

There's no definitive answer to your question because there are times
when hidden content might be perfectly legitimate. It all depends on
whether the content is embedded in the page to help users and only
temporarily hidden from their view as a part of the site design, or is
the content there only to try to manipulate the search engines and
hidden to keep it invisible to real users. I honestly don't know how
well Google can detect some of the more sophisticated methods of hiding
content. You should have no worries if you're just trying to add some
flair to your design with pop-up menus or information boxes. But any
time you intentionally try to fool the search engines with hidden
content, you risk some snoopy user or competitor reporting you. So
even if you evade the search engine's automated SPAM detection
software, there's liable to be a real user out there who will notice
it. Good luck!

As to how good the algorithm is at picking it up, thats a different
matter.

Hello Paula,
Yes, it's true. I saw it happen to an associate, and it wasn't pretty.
The best thing to do is avoid them altogether, even if you have a good
reason to use them.
