Is a DMOZ listing important?
Posted by schristopher101@hotmail.com on March 7th, 2006

To the web optimizers, I'm just wondering how vital it is to be listed
in DMOZ for the Google page rankings to be at acceptable levels. There
are many categories in the ODP that are simply not updated in a very
timely manner. I wish you could just pay Google an annual fee to be
included in the category directories similar to the service that Yahoo!
has. Unfortunately that isn't the case. With that said, are we at the
mercy of volunteer editors to help us become recognized in Google
results? Thx

Googles own words 'The content of the Google directory is based on
the Open Directory
I submit that it is important to be listed in DMOZ in order to get page
rankings. Shortly you will see replies from the DMOZ editors who will
claim that it is not important. They will be obnoxious and try to hide
the truth behind a screen of purile, infantile and unture comments.
If you research the backbones of google you will see that its directory
is based in part on DMOZ. Search term 'google' then scroll down the
list of entries until you reach google directory.
DMOZ editors serve only their own interests - who can blame them - they
are not paid.
Therefore if your site conflicts with their interests you can forget
being listed.
As proof of how absurd DMOZ has become a top site in their directory on
guns has 12000 plus keywords stuffed in its metatag. Moreover the site
does not actually have any of the guns it sells.
DMOZ does not properly vet its editors in the same way an employer
would e.g. no checks on criminal records. Therefore if your site
promotes or sells childrens toys it could be a convicted peadophile who
is vetting your site.
There are many who advocate DMOZ should be shut down but are afraid to
speak as they know it will harm their listings in DMOZ.
Its only a matter of time before AOL and Google take notice of the
concerns of the vast majority of web-site owners who want this
ludicrously unfair and incompetantly slow organisation shutdown.
Having said all that you can still acheive high rankings by following
the route of honest web-sites and register with all the relevant high
PR directories whilst building links with relevant sites. DMOZ is
regretably still important but no longer vital.
Best of luck with your endeavours.

Thanks for the insight. I can't imagine that this set-up will go on
forever. At least, I certainly hope not.

A DMOZ listng is no more valuable than any other link of similar PR. I
have sites that rank better than competitors who have DMOZ listings and
my sites do not.

Ignore j...@silverstall.com unbalanced views as they have a chip on
their shoulder because their site was not good enough for a listing -
just check their profile and look at the rants and the replies.

yeah whatever. It just happens to be the 5th largets search engine in
the world. If it as unimportant as you suggest then why are you are
trying to vigrously defend it?
