- Newbie question on "client database" limits
- Posted by Caroline on December 28th, 2005
Hello folks!
I am planning to sell my first eBook this summer. Its on a hot
explosive political topic, and I plan to charge a very low fee, about 7
UK Pound Sterling or US dollars (final result depending upon testing).
With this mix, I expect to sell a lot many copies, i.e., lots of
customers, given the low price and the relevant content.
My problem is that most web-hosting companies have "client database"
limits that may be relevant to highly priced products, or multiple
product stores, with fixed returns from a stable number of prospects.
But, for me, with a single low-priced product that needs wide
circulation, i.e., more prospects, a nearly unlimited "client database"
is a must.
Can you provide me with information about web-hosts that are fairly
priced for a beginner with basic investment [i.e., less than $100 per
month], that can provide unlimited [meaning unlimited] "client
databases"? Also, if there is some cap, say 100 thousand or one
million, then what are the charges for upgrading [in real time]?
I am also thinking on the lines of obtaining a web-host possessing the
rudiments, i.e., mySQL, PHP, SSL, Perl, etc., having unlimited email
and autoresponders. Will they also have unlimited "client databases"?
They do talk of unlimited mySQL databases, is that the same thing?
One final question
The web-host that I mentioned above has a 500 MB storage for their US
$25 per month account [with 15 GB per month bandwidth]. How much space
does a mySQL client database take per client? And, how many "client
database" entries can fit into 400 MB?
Thanks for reading through this long query.
Sincerely,
Caroline Brandt

Howdy Caroline,
There is no such thing as an "unlimited" data base. Every program running
on a computer must have limitations. The other problem you will run into is
as the number of records increases, so does the time to respond to clicks on
a web site. The better solutions have ways to archive and segment the data
base so active and current records run faster.
I think you are being way overly optimistic. Realistically, you'll probably
sell more like 5,000 copies.
Again, there is no such thing as "unlimited" on a computer. What they are
saying is they don't know what the limits are and don't set a fixed limit
for pricing. They will tell you anything to get your business and then want
more money when their server starts to fuss about being overloaded.
I doubht very seriously if the customer base for Amazon.com comes close to
400 Megs. That would also crash many hosting servers. What you need is
hosting and web design where you can get off to a good start and they have
the ability to keep things working for you. BIZynet's BIZyCart Ecommerce
Server software does not have the limitations imposed by scripts or mySQL
and we look after our clients a bit better that most.
Thanks, Chris www.bizynet.com and www.bizycart.com
