alt.ecommerce
Frequently Asked Questions (Last revised April 29, 2002)
Alt.ecommerce is for the discussion of topics relating to doing
business on
the Internet. Discussions concerning ecommerce business models,
obtaining
merchant accounts, accepting credit cards, experiences in ecommerce,
shopping
carts, and web design as it relates to doing business on the web are
all
welcome topics.
Some DOs and Don'ts of proper Net-etiquette
• Don't post Blatant ads. Recommend a product or service within the
context
of a current topic or thread. However, the posting of ads is
considered SPAM
and will most likely be reported.
• Don't cross-post. There are a few other newsgroups with similar
topics as
alt-ecommerce. However, try not to cross-post. If you are replying
to a
message that has cross-posting, please take a moment and remove the
other
newsgroup references from your reply.
• Don’t' post large signatures to your messages. Try to keep them
under five
lines.
• Do take the time to read other USENET FAQs and help files. You can
find
them at http://www.ibiblio.org/usenet-i/usenet-help.html or
http://www.faqs.org/
• Do contribute to the threads in the newsgroup. The best way to get
the most
out of a newsgroup is to get involved. Ask a question related to the
newsgroup topic and see what kind of response you get.
• Do ask for help. Got a question about ecommerce? Ask it. Want
someone to
comment on your business plan? Post it.
• Do have fun.
Q. Can I post advertising for my products or services in
alt.ecommerce?
A. The explicit posting of ads in the alt-ecommerce newsgroup is not
allowed.
(see next question)
Q. How can I advertise my product or service without getting in
trouble?
A. Advertise your products or service within the context of an ongoing
thread. Make it part of the dialog between conference participates.
If you
feel your product of service could offer the solution being sought,
then offer
it. However, don't be surprised when your competition does the same
thing.
Q. Can I reply to a poster's question with a product solution as
though I was
a third-party when in fact, I am an employee, share-holder,
representative of
the company that makes the product?
A. No. When replying to posters with potential solutions, you should
be
completely honest and above board. If you are the owner /
manufacturer /
proprietor of the proposed solution you should say so. If you have an
affiliation with the product or service, you should say so. If you
work for
the company that makes the product or service, you should say so. Do
not try
and be deceptive and pretend you are a disinterested third party
offering a
solution for which you in fact have a financial interest. That is
dishonest.
Q. Is there a newsgroup where I can post ads?
A. Try posting to the newsgroup alt.www.marketing.adverts. You can
also
search for various newsgroups that are specifically for advertising.
These
usually have some sort of name with an ".ads" component to it.
Q. So what if I break the rules. What can you do about it?
A. You may get away with an off-topic post once in awhile. However,
don't be
surprised if you get a few friendly warnings from the conference
participants. If such behavior continues, you will be reported to the
place
where you post to this newsgroup. System administrators usually have
no
tolerance for people who spam.
Q. What is considered to be "on-topic" for this newsgroup?
A: Just about anything that relates to doing business on the internet
is fair
game. Topics that are deemed appropriate include ecommerce business
models,
obtaining merchant accounts, accepting credit cards, experiences in
ecommerce,
shopping carts, and web design as it relates to doing business on the
web are
all welcome topics. Basically, any topic that discusses doing business
on the
internet but are not specific product ads, are welcome discussion
areas.
